Holidaymakers are failing to get travel insurance all too often, which could land them with serious financial repercussions, according to former Wish You Were Here presenter Judith Chalmers.

As many as one million UK holidaymakers are expected to travel abroad without the proper level of cover between now and the end of the year, research from the Post Office has found.

Ms Chalmers said it is "absolutely staggering" that so many people would go abroad without the safeguard of travel insurance, especially as the consequences can be dire if something goes wrong.

Additionally, the research revealed that nearly half of travellers will face charges for using their credit cards abroad despite the fact that cards are now available that charge nothing for transactions.

"It is quite disconcerting when you think about the amount of money that sometimes is actually wasted by not having the right credit card," added Ms Chalmers.
