Travel insurance: Holidaymakers advised to check travel insurance small print
Tuesday, 06 April 2010
Which? Holiday has advised holidaymakers to check through the small print of their travel insurance policy carefully and not assume it covers everything.
If a travel insurance holder missed their flight due to bad traffic, only half of insurers would pay compensation, however, the majority would pay out if the delays were due to public transport.
Some 91 per cent of policies from 80 different insurers would cover holidaymakers if there were an airline strike.
If an terrorism act occurred, only 18 per cent of travel insurance providers would pay out, but 70 per cent would cover any emergency medical treatment required.
"Holidaymakers tend to assume that if they've taken out travel insurance, they'll be covered for disasters beyond their control," said Rochelle Turner, head of research at Which? Holiday. "Sadly, our rigorous research has found that's not always the case."
Over the coming year, Britons are likely to be heading on more holidays than ever before, according to recent research, which means people should ensure their travel insurance policy covers any unforeseen circumstances.
Two-thirds of travel firms have seen an increase in the number of bookings made in 2010, research conducted by Wanderlust Magazine and the Association of Independent Tour Operators (AITO) has found.
