Travel insurance: Portugal shunned by travelling Brits

Thursday, 06 July 2006

The defeat of England in the World Cup could be influencing where Brits take their summer holidays.

Travel agents have reported a surge in demand for holidays now that the World Cup is almost over but many fans are not planning to visit Portugal.

Online travel company lastminute.com reported that bookings have increased by around 35 per cent on Sunday and Monday after England lost to Portugal on penalties.

However, Portugal has fallen from the fourth most-searched destination to 15th.

The company's travel director, John Bevan, said: "We expect interest will bounce back but at the moment the loss is still a bit raw. But we hope that English holidaymakers don't boycott the Algarve for long as a result of the match."

Anyone planning a trip abroad is being reminded to make sure they have adequate travel insurance before jetting off. Travellers can shop around for comprehensive cheap travel insurance cover and get quick travel insurance quotes online.
