Travel insurance: More Brits 'head abroad for treatment'

Friday, 12 October 2007

A high number of UK residents have travelled abroad in order to get medical treatment at a lower cost than at home, new research from TreatmentAbroad has found.

The company claimed that 50,000 Britons went to overseas countries to seek out cheaper treatments, including dentistry and cosmetic surgery, something that could lead them to purchase valid travel insurance.

In total, the firm said that 80 per cent can be saved on some procedures in foreign countries, with Belgium, Malaysia and India having proved popular.

TreatmentAbroad.net's Keith Pollard noted that there is a definite shift in the way patients go about getting their services.

"Many clinics and medical tourism companies are now offering an all-in package embracing all procedure, travel and accommodation costs that may offer additional savings," he commented.

He added that medical tourists are positive about their experiences. Recently, a spokesperson at easyJet stated that the internet has dramatically changed the way people look to travel abroad.
