Motor insurance holders advised to check tyres
Tuesday, 06 July 2010
Motor insurance customers should check their tyres before they set off on any long journeys this summer, it has been suggested.
Car insurance holders should not only inspect the condition of the tyres to ensure they have adequate tread but they should also make sure they are properly inflated - taking into account any additional weight, TyreSafe advises.
Conducting these simple checks before embarking on a journey could reduce the risk of tyre blow-outs or accidents, which could impact on car insurance premiums.
"If the warm weather we've recently experienced continues throughout the summer, we may see many more tyre-related incidents on our roads unless drivers check their tyres before setting off on holiday," said TyreSafe chairman Stuart Jackson.
In the UK, the legal limit for the minimum depth of tread on a tyre is 1.6mm.
For safety reasons, it is recommended that motor insurance customers replace their tyres before they become that worn, preferably at around 3mm.
