Car Insurance: Vehicles 'should be equipped with tyre pressure gauge'

Wednesday, 03 December 2008

If all new cars included a tyre pressure gauge, the number of motor insurance claims in the UK may fall, it has been suggested.

Gem Motoring Assist pointed out under-inflated tyres were at least partly responsible for the deaths of 43 drivers last year and played a part in about 1,000 other accidents.

Chief executive David Williams said motorists could not rely on the gauges on petrol station forecourts to be accurate.

As a result, he stated it made sense for pressure reading kits to be included with new cars.

Mr Williams added the item may encourage more people to check their tyre pressure on a regular basis.

"People are very neglectful about checking their tyres and that is reflected in more than one million MOT failures in 2007/08 as a result of tyre defects," he claimed.

Meanwhile, Gem has also warned motorists to take extra care when driving at night, or they could end up having to make a car insurance claim.
