Car insurance: Drivers warned over vigilante tyre-slasher
Monday, 14 August 2006
Drivers are being warned against a vigilante who is targeting motorists who use mobile phones whilst driving.
Police in Hampshire are investigating a number of incidents involving slashed tyres on cars where a note has been left on the car's windscreen.
The note reads: "Warning. You have been seen driving while using your mobile phone."
Police are linking 20 incidents in the Gosport, Lee-on-the-Solent and Stubbington areas and believe the vandal could have been the victim of an accident caused by a driver not paying attention because they were using a mobile phone.
Inspector Kevin Cuffe, the investigating officer, said: "Forensic specialists are in the process of examining these notes to gather potential evidence."
He added: "Whoever is doing this may feel that he or she has some sort of justification but there is never any excuse to vandalise the property of others and we will investigate these incidents fully."
Drivers are warned that using a mobile phone whilst driving is not only dangerous but can lead to a fine or even points on driving licences. This could mean increased car insurance quotes and higher motoring costs in the long-term especially as motorists are four times more likely to crash if they are talking on a phone whilst driving.
