Car insurance: Motorists 'need to tread carefully'
Wednesday, 25 March 2009
A car insurance claim could be the least of a motorist's worries if they have an accident as a result of driving around on dangerous tyres, it has been suggested.
Continental Tyres issued this warning after it conducted research that found the tyres of up to 3.5 million road users in the UK may not meet legal minimum requirements.
The company questioned 4,000 drivers and one in ten had insufficient tread depth, while one in four did not know how to check their wheels were fit for purpose.
According to Continental, three-quarters of motorists are aware not having enough tread can lead to accidents in wet weather.
However, it added too many drivers were still failing to take the necessary precautions.
Spokesman Tim Bailey commented: "People just don't think about it enough or they don't know what to look for."
Drivers who have an accident in a vehicle that is not deemed to be roadworthy may find their motor insurance provider refuses to pay out.
