Car insurance: Poorly-inflated tyres 'can cost motorists money'

Tuesday, 07 October 2008

As well as risking having to make a claim on their car insurance, motorists who fail to check their tyres regularly could be throwing away money, according to TyreSafe.

The organisation said correctly-inflated tyres can reduce CO2 emissions and improve fuel efficiency.

It explained research has shown driving on tyres which are ten pounds per square inch under the recommended pressure level can increase the amount motorists spend at the pump by 2.5 per cent.

TyreSafe chairman Rob Beddis said despite the fact maintaining tyres at their optimum level is quick and easy, some drivers were not doing it.

However, he pointed out: "By taking just a few minutes every month to check the pressure of each tyre and adjust it to the recommended level, significant improvements to road safety will be made."

Meanwhile, TyreSafe has also previously advised motor insurance customers to make sure they understand the various codes on the side of their tyres.
