Travel insurance: More people holidaying in UK, says expert

More people are choosing to take holidays and short breaks in the UK, travel insurance customers may be interested to hear.

Russell Amerasekera, who writes for the Daily Mail and has appeared on the BBC's Holiday programme, said the credit crunch seems to be reducing the amount consumers have to spend on getaways.

As a result, they have "woken up to the fact" that major cities in the UK can provide entertainment and culture without the need to spend hours on a plane.

"We are seeing a real trend for people wanting to stay in the UK who want to do these shorter holidays and in particular city breaks," Mr Amerasekera said.

His comments were made alongside a recent survey conducted by, which found that 47 per cent of adults in the UK think shopping is the most essential activity for inclusion in a "perfect weekend".
