UK is Europe's whiplash capital, says ABI

Saturday, 28 May 2011

Car insurance customers have been told the UK has become the European whiplash claims capital, according to the Association of British Insurers (ABI).

The organisation noted that one in every 140 people have said they have suffered from whiplash every year in Britain.

Furthermore, its research found that almost 1,200 whiplash claims are made every day, and the cost to the NHS for treating this type of injury is £8 million per annum.

James Dalton, assistant director of motor and liability at ABI, said: "Despite the statistics I doubt that that the UK has some of the weakest necks in Europe. Often difficult to diagnose, easy to fake and exaggerate whiplash is a fraudsters dream."

He added that there needs to be more work and partnerships made to reduce claims in the future.

Recently, Brake told car insurance customers that driving is one of the most dangerous things most Brits do on a regular basis.
