Car insurance: UK is Europe's car sales leader

Tuesday, 17 November 2009

The UK is leading the way for car insurance customers' motor consumption in Europe thanks to the government's cash for bangers incentive scheme, new figures have shown.

Data released by the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association revealed that while the large markets of Europe all produced significant sales last month, the UK was in the lead with an increase of 31.6 per cent.

And UK car sales have almost doubled in the last month alone with nearly 170,000 new vehicles taking to the road, according to figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

Western Europe drastically outpaced the new EU member states, with an increase of 15.8 per cent compared to the new states' respective decrease of 36.9 per cent during October 2009, compared with the same period a year earlier.

Overall car sales for this year climbed back to minus three per cent for Europe - an improvement on last year when they were down 14 per cent after May.

However, the only countries to show gains in 2009 from 2008 are Germany (+25.9 per cent), Slovakia (+13.5 per cent), the Czech Republic (+8.2 per cent), Austria (+6.3 per cent), France (+4.2 per cent) and Poland (+0.6 per cent).
