Car insurance: UK car production at strongest levels for a year

Monday, 23 November 2009

Despite the fact that car production fell last month the decline was the smallest this year, car insurance customers may be interested to know.

Figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) show that a total of 106,400 cars were made in the UK in October 2009 - a drop of 6.7 per cent on the October 2008 figure.

Car production for the year so far is now down 38.1 per cent compared with the January to October 2008 total.

However, the government's cash for bangers car scrappage scheme, introduced in May, has helped the motor industry, with new car sales now in positive territory and production levels picking up.

SMMT chief executive Paul Everitt said the scrappage scheme and early signs of recovery in global markets offered some encouragement to UK vehicle producers.

He added that next year was expected to be another difficult year for the industry, particularly given that the scrappage scheme is due to expire by February 28th 2010.
