Car insurance: Other motorists 'paying for uninsured drivers'
Thursday, 04 September 2008
Honest motorists with car insurance are footing the bill for those who drive without cover, according to the British Insurance Brokers' Association (Biba).
The group claims uninsured drivers are costing the car insurance industry around £500 million a year.
It states this adds an average of £31 to the insurance policies of other drivers.
Commenting on the phenomenon, Graeme Trudgill said: "It's a big problem and it costs everyone else a lot of money."
He added that the punishment dished out to those driving without car insurance is perceived as being "very light" and so some people are prepared to chance it.
Research conducted by YouGov has revealed the average fine for getting caught driving without motor insurance in the UK is £250.
Of those people questioned, 79 per cent felt this was too low.
The survey also found 68 per cent of motorists involved in an accident with an uninsured driver either had to pay for the incident themselves or claim on their own car insurance.
