Car insurance: Uninsured drivers 'worse than thieves'

Friday, 06 October 2006

Drivers in the UK are more likely to report a driver without car insurance to the authorities rather than a benefit cheat or a dodgy salesman, according to new research.

An insurance company surveyed over 2,000 drivers and found that a third are prepared to report an uninsured driver, even if it were a close family member. Furthermore 13 per cent said that driving without cheap car insurance is worse than drink-driving or speeding.

Most people were unaware of how low the penalty is for driving without car insurance and estimated it at £2,000 rather than the actual figure, a considerably lower £200.

Frances Browning, from the company who commissioned the research, said: "It is obvious that drivers in the UK feel the current fixed penalty for uninsured driving is far too low, with 35% per cent claiming the fine should be increased to at least £1,000 putting it in line with being caught without a TV licence, a considerably less serious offence.”

Getting a quick car insurance quote online is easy and especially important when you consider that 83 per cent of honest drivers think people who drive without adequate cover are more likely to commit other crimes.
