Car insurance: Britons in favour of van driver courses
Friday, 17 November 2006
Car insurance customers are in favour of improving road safety through the introduction of safe driver courses and refresher tests, according to the latest research.
Ryder Europe polled UK drivers to find that 80 per cent of motorists believe that van and truck drivers should be forced to take regular compulsory refresher tests.
A quarter of those who responded also think that speed cameras are a good way of improving e safety of British roads.
Peter Backhouse, managing director at Ryder Europe, said: "It is very interesting that our research found so many were in favour of compulsory periodic retesting or driver safety courses.
"This goes much further than some of the measures in the new Road Safety Bill and many people believe they could make a real impact in improving road safety."
The new Road Safety Bill gives police greater powers to eradicate drink driving and improve the driving safety of younger drivers.
For example one idea suggested is to cap the amount of passengers which a newly-qualified young driver is allowed to carry in his/her vehicle.
