Motor insurance: Vandals get savvy on motors

Thursday, 23 November 2006

Vandals have struck over 3.5 million cars in the last year and caused damage amounting to £563 million, according to a new report.

More cheekily, vandals are now striking outside car owners' homes rather than in the old haunts such as car parks which have CCTV protection these days.

Some 45 per cent of vandalism happens outside homes now according to one insurance company report and London is the worst place for it.

Emma Holyer, spokeswoman for the insurance company, said: "Vandalism is one of the most irritating problems motorists are facing today.

"These vandals have become savvy to where they can get away with this pointless crime and this is causing worry and misery for drivers."

Scratching with keys or smashing windows are both acts which cost an average of £150 to repair and those who claim on their cheap car insurance may face losing their no claims bonus.
