Travel insurance customers 'be aware of differing volcanic ash compensation'

Monday, 10 May 2010

Travel insurance customers should be aware of the differences in compensation that tour operators and airlines are offering when it comes to disruption caused by the volcanic ash, it has been claimed.

There is growing concern that the volcanic ash could continue to cause disruption to the plans of travel insurance policyholders throughout the summer as some flights are still being cancelled or are subject to delays.

According to Sue Ockwell, spokesperson for the Association of Independent Tour Operators (AITO), travel insurance customers who are on a budget should be especially carefully when it comes the ash as airlines are less likely to offer compensation than tour operators.

"If it's a couple and you've both got credit cards then it's not the end of the world but if there is a family of you and budgets are fairly tight then the last thing you need is to be stuck for an extra five or six days and have to incur the costs," she said.

A series of scam emails claiming to be from the Civil Aviation Authority have been offering bogus compensation payments to travel insurance policyholders in the wake of the volcanic ash chaos.
