Volunteers catch speeding drivers

Saturday, 28 January 2012

Drivers in Staffordshire have been urged to drive more safely, after 1,500 were caught speeding by groups of volunteers armed with radar speed guns on the roads.

While the volunteers' findings are not enough to fine someone or add points to their licenses, it is hoped that the issued warning letters will be enough to urge them to slow down and reduce the risk of injury and car insurance claims.

In the period from April 2010 to September 2011, letters were issued to 1,577 drivers in total.

This figure will add further worry for drivers, after it was revealed recently that some 23,787 people in Kent were caught speeding by cameras in 2010.

Mike Maryon, cabinet member for highways and transport at Staffordshire County Council, told This is Staffordshire: "The impact that the volunteers have, acting as a deterrent simply by being there or issuing warning letters to motorists caught flouting the law, could be potentially life-saving."
