The warm weather may tempt you in to leaving a window or two open in your home, but the practice should be avoided, police have warned.

The Hampshire Constabulary has given out this advice to residents, as it believes that leaving windows and doors open acts as an invitation to robbers.

Last October, the police force began Operation Nemesis to crack down on burglary and now the initiative is set to be extended until June, with homeowners being warned to lock up their windows or risk losing belongings.

Chief constable Alex Marshall said: "When people are out enjoying this unusually warm weather it may be an easy to forget to close a window or make sure doors are locked, but it is essential that you keep your homes and properties secure."

Mr Marshall warned that many burglars are opportunistic and will search for an easy method of accessing homes or cars.
