Motor insurance holders are being advised to take precautions against number plate thefts in the UK.

This is especially prevalent in the Greater Manchester area, where police are urging drivers to take a few simple steps to protect their number plates after numerous thefts in the region.

Greater Manchester police officers are advising car insurance customers to attach their number plates with "one way screws" because these are more difficult to unscrew and could help to discourage thieves.

Inspector Mark Kenny of the Prestwich and Whitefield Neighbourhood Policing Teams said: "We are working to tackle this issue but need motorists to support us by taking appropriate steps to help reduce their vulnerability to this type of crime.

Mr Kenny added that stolen number plates are often used to mask other cars which are then used for unlawful acts.

As well as this, drivers can also equip special anti-theft plates which disintegrate whenever someone tries to remove them from a vehicle.
