It is imperative that those heading off to Europe to enjoy the last few days of the skiing season check there tyres are in good condition before they do so, one organisation has claimed.

According to tyres watchdog TyreSafe, ensuring one's wheels are safe can reduce the chances of drivers needing to make claims on their car insurance, as efficient tyres can decrease the risk of being in an accident.

Tyres with sufficient tread on them are also better able to cope in icy conditions and deal with bouts of adverse weather.

It is also crucial that as well as checking the tread, motor insurance holders look at the tyre pressure, as heavy luggage can have a detrimental effect on it.

"Many motorists neglect to adjust their tyre pressures to take account of heavy skiing equipment and extra passengers, which can lead to a build-up of heat inside the tyre as it strains to perform under the additional weight," TyreSafe adds.
