Motor insurance: Petition seeks to make Wigan road safer
Monday, 23 June 2008
Wigan car insurance policyholders are being urged to sign a new petition that calls for tighter driving restrictions on a road in the town.
Lancashire grandfather Bob Evans has launched the petition calling for a 20mph zone and a 7.5 tonne weight restriction to be put in place along Kitt Green Road, Wigan Today reports.
Mr Evans, 62, has already collected over 500 signatures in his campaign to extend a 20mph speed limit and traffic calming measures along the whole of Kitt Green Road, rather than simply at the bottom near a primary school.
He asked: "We are having wagons up and down this road - big trailers all hours day and night. How long is it going to be before someone gets hurt?"
According to Mr Evans, children and old people are particularly at risk from the current traffic speeds and volumes on the road.
Councillor Paul Prescott insists that the Wigan Council highways department has made efforts to improve road safety, but it is not possible to enforce weight restrictions, which must be made law and enforced by police, for technical reasons.
Motorists in Lancashire are being advised to avoid a local speed camera that has snapped 1,200 drivers in just three weeks if they want to ensure that their car insurance premiums remain low.
