Motor insurance customers could face more hardship on the roads of Britain this weekend, with fuel supplies depleting, experts say.

This is due to the fact that the treacherous weather conditions are leading to a "critical" shortage of fuel, according to the Retail Motor Industry Independent Petrol Retailers Association (RMI Petrol).

The company represents around two thirds of the 9,000 petrol forecourt sites in the UK and it has said that certain forecourts have already run out of fuel, while others are in danger of running out of diesel or potentially even petrol by this weekend.

Meanwhile, the price comparison site Confused.com is informing drivers to make certain that they have sufficient fuel and reliable breakdown cover in place before setting off on their journeys this week.

The website warns that motorists could face a long delay in the cold if they run out of petrol, while they could also face maintenance charges reaching hundreds of pounds.
