Car insurance: How to avoid a breakdown this winter

Tuesday, 01 December 2009

Brits are being urged to take steps this winter to avoid suffering a breakdown and possible car insurance claims.

Some 7,000 cars breakdown every day in the UK and this number rises during colder months, says Total.

By preparing their vehicle in advance, motorists can stay safe on the roads.

The garage chain calls on drivers to carry out a few checks and precautionary measures to help ensure they do not get stranded at the side of the road.

Tyres are particularly important as rain, snow and ice mean less grip and more hazardous braking conditions. They should be kept at the recommended pressure and have at least the minimum legal requirement of 1.6 mm tread depth.

Fluid levels must be checked regularly, including water and coolant and windscreen washer.

And to ensure drivers can see clearly, the windscreen and all lights should be cleaned of grit and dirt before heading off.
