Car insurance: Drivers 'need to take care as weather gets worse'

Monday, 24 November 2008

Drivers who do not want to end up making a car insurance claim this winter, need to prepare for deteriorating weather conditions, according to the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM).

The group has said when roads are treacherous people should only get behind the wheel if a journey is unavoidable.

It added, if a trip is necessary, drivers should allow extra time, as other road users will be travelling more slowly than usual.

The group also pointed out stopping distances increase on icy roads so motorists should keep well back from the vehicle in front.

Drivers were also advised to carry an emergency kit in case of a breakdown, including items such as a torch, a fully-charged mobile phone, warm outdoor clothing and a reflective jacket.

In other news, IAM has claimed parents can reduce their children's chances of having to make a motor insurance claim by taking them out for extra practice when they are learning to drive.
