Winter driving tips from IAM

Wednesday, 08 February 2012

With the news emerging earlier this week that the conditions in the UK could worsen further for drivers, and the cold snap expected to last for a month, according to the Met Office, motorists have been given tips on staying safe.

With an increased chance of crashes and car insurance claims in winter weather conditions, road charity the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has advised drivers on the best ways to stay safe on the roads.

Main tips include not using brakes unless necessary, and trying to steer out of trouble instead, because braking can cause drivers to skid more. Drivers have also been advised to use busier routes, as they are the most likely to have been gritted.

It also said that staying home if possible should be the preferred option.

IAM chief examiner Peter Rodger said: "Don't drive unless it's completely necessary and check the conditions for your entire journey. Can you work remotely, or change your schedule?"
