The government has ordered a review of how the transport sector responded to the recent cold snap which swept the country.

Britain was blighted by snow and adverse weather conditions earlier this year which caused significant harm to the roads and increased the chances of drivers having to make claims on their car insurance policies for pothole damage and other incidents.

The review ill take place in two stages and will be led by RAC Foundation chairman David Quarmby.

It will examine how the transport authorities responded to the situation and make recommendations on future plans of action.

Transport secretary Lord Adonis said: "For the most part our transport networks have coped well, but there are lessons that can be learned in order to improve our resilience for future winters."

The recent cold snap saw insurance companies pay out more than ?395 million to motorists who claimed on their car insurance for damage from potholes and accidents.
