Travel insurance: World Cup 'will encourage more Brits to visit South Africa'

Wednesday, 21 October 2009

The number of people taking out travel insurance and heading to South Africa next year could be set to rise, if the comments of one industry body are anything to go by.

According to Abta - The Travel Association, the fact the country is holding the World Cup in 2010 will encourage significantly more British tourists than usual to visit the nation.

The group went on to say the destination is already a popular choice with people from the UK.

Spokesman Sean Tipton stated: "There's around about 650,000 [British tourists visiting South Africa] a year but with the World Cup, it is going to go through the roof next year."

He added winter trips to the country - and other destinations in the southern hemisphere - are also popular because when the UK is at its coldest, places like this are in the midst of summer.

Mr Tipton predicted the Canary Islands and Egypt would also be a hit with Brits looking to get away in the coming months.
