Car insurance: Safety campaign reduces accident rate in east Yorks

Monday, 18 January 2010

Crashes which are likely to result in a claim on car insurance have been significantly reduced on East Riding of Yorkshire roads following a high profile safety campaign.

Provisional police figures show there were 162 serious collisions in 2009, compared to 210 in 2008 - a reduction of 22 per cent, reports the Hull Daily Mail.

Further, the number of crashes in which people were killed or seriously injured has been reduced by more than a fifth, according to initial figures for 2009.

Last year police ran more than 50 road safety operations in a bid to cut accidents, including high visibility roadside checks and campaigns targeting high-risk groups, such as young drivers and high-speed drivers.

Inspector Mark Hughes told the news provider that a lot of the work was educational, such as pointing out vehicle defects to drivers which could potentially put them at risk on the roads.

"Anyone who drives normally, as they should, has got nothing to worry about," he added.

More than two in five motorists have admitted to driving with one or more dangerous defects in the past 12 months, such as tyres in poor condition, broken lights and poor brakes, according to a recent survey by road safety campaign group Brake.
