Motor insurance: Young drivers 'to be set new rules'
Wednesday, 08 November 2006
Britain's insurance industry wants tougher rules to stem the risks taken by young drivers on UK roads.
The Association of British Insurers (ABI) wants to see a minimum learning period installed in law so that young drivers have to practice their skills for a while before sitting their driving test.
A limit on the amount of passengers carried by young drivers is also sought by the ABI who yesterday spoke to the government.
Nick Starling, director of general insurance at ABI, said: "Every day, four people are killed or seriously injured in crashes involving young drivers and the trend is getting worse.
"It is essential that the government acts now, adopts these proposals and improves safety on our roads. By doing so, this tragic loss of life can be reduced."
Young drivers tend to pay more on their premiums but can still benefit from shopping online for the car insurance.
