Car insurance: Youths 'have no regard for speed limit'
Tuesday, 09 October 2007
Younger motorists are more likely to break the speed limit, according to new research carried out by the charity Brake.
In total, those aged between 17 and 24 are not as cautious as older motorists and are almost two times more prone to going above the legal maximum speed, reports the Lancashire Telegraph.
The problem is at its worst on country lanes, the organisation said, where the youths often tear along at uncompromising speeds, something that could have a negative impact on their car insurance if any damage occurs.
Head of education at Brake John Townsend said that some action must be taken to limit the reckless driving currently being seen.
"This research serves as further indication that action must be taken to stop deadly risk-taking among young drivers," he told the publication.
He added that it is "horrifying" to see so many inexperienced drivers taking such massive risks.
This week, the European commission said that it wants to implement Brake-Assist Systems in the European Union by 2009, something it stated will cut down on accidents.
