Motor insurance: Speed camera snaps 1,200 Lancashire drivers

Friday, 20 June 2008

Lancashire motorists looking to keep their car insurance premiums low may want to avoid a local speed camera that has already caught out 1,200 drivers in three weeks.

The device has been set up on a stretch of roadworks on the A56 Accrington bypass to reduce the speed limit from 70mph to just 50mph while renovations are in progress, reports the Burnley Citizen.

It has already netted seven times the average annual camera income for the area, prompting many to speculate its presence is little more than a moneymaking initiative.

Ribble Valley MP Nigel Evans tells the newspaper: "It is obscene how many people have been caught. I think for those motorists that were doing under 70mph a warning letter would have sufficed."

However, the camera has been defended by local police, who insist it will minimise crash risk until workmen have replaced the central reservation barrier.

Earlier this month a road safety initiative in Essex was hailed a success by officers after six people were arrested and 24 cars impounded.
