With more snow and ice having played havoc with the journeys of car insurance policyholders over the weekend, drivers are being urged to make sure they continue to be careful on the roads.

The Highways Agency is advising drivers to check the weather forecast and road conditions before travelling, while plans for a round-the-clock motorway treatment strategy are being put in place in partnership with the Met Office.

Last Friday, Britain was hit by more snowfall, although many areas suffered as rain and sleet earlier in the day led to large amounts of black ice.

Jason Glasson, of the Highways Agencys severe weather team, told motor insurance holders that not all journeys are essential.

The Highways Agency advises drivers to take a severe weather emergency kit and to check traffic reports and weather conditions - and always remember to plan their journeys.

Mr Glasson comments: "Pay particular care where conditions such as gradients, bends or overhanging trees might increase the risk of difficult conditions."
