Travel insurance: Millions of Britons unaware of EHIC

Friday, 07 July 2006

Millions of British travellers are heading abroad over the next few months to take a well-earned break after the stress of the World Cup.

But new research reveals some 64 per cent of British adults are oblivious to the fact that the E111 form has been replaced by the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) and that this in turn won't cover for all eventualities.

The E111 form was phased out in January 1st this year, although around 58 per cent of people still believe it will provide them with free medical cover in Europe.

In the event of illness or accident abroad on the continent, UK holidaymakers can present their EHIC to secure free state medical treatment. However, the card does not cover for all accidents and damages – such as theft of valuables – and has a relatively low financial reimbursement for medical costs.

Experts admit travellers should not see the EHIC as a replacement for travel insurance in any way, rather that the two can complement each other.

Britons unaware of the changes to the E111 form are urged to make sure they update themselves with an EHIC, as well as taking out travel insurance for each trip they go on, or annual travel insurance for multiple trips throughout the year.
