Car Insurance: 'Thieves will be looking for cars left running'
Thursday, 04 December 2008
Drivers who want to avoid a car insurance claim are being reminded not to leave vehicles unattended with the engine running on frosty mornings.
Police in Milton Keynes have issued this warning following the theft of a BMW earlier this week.
A female motorist left her vehicle running to warm it up while she went back inside the house, believing it would be safe as the car was on a gated driveway.
While the owner was inside her house, a criminal stole the motor and used the fob on the keys to open the electric gates.
Crime prevention adviser Ed Allington said: "Thieves will be out looking for exactly this kind of opportunity on cold mornings, so I would urge everyone with a vehicle not to leave it running."
He added a motor insurance company could refuse to pay out if a car is stolen under these circumstances because it was not secured.
This comes after Caroline Johnson from Langley was left seriously injured earlier this month after a thief stole her vehicle as she scraped ice off and then ran her over.
