Travel insurance: Holidaymakers 'need to be careful with cards'

Thursday, 12 February 2009

In addition to taking out travel insurance when heading abroad, holidaymakers may be well-advised to try and protect themselves by exercising caution when carrying out card transactions in another country.

According to travelsupermarket.com, people should not let down their guard during a vacation when it comes to financial security.

Duncan Barraclough, head of hotels, said: "You have to be more vigilant."

He stated holidaymakers should ensure their cards are not taken out of view when making a purchase.

Mr Barraclough added people should be "happy that your transaction is being done through a reputable establishment".

Individuals who have had money stolen while abroad should check the terms and conditions of their travel insurance to see whether they can make a claim.

A recent survey from travelsupermarket.com revealed 31 per cent of people advised their credit or debit card provider in advance of making overseas trips in 2008.

It also found one in nine Brits were unable to take cash out in another country or had credit card transactions denied.
