Home insurance customers are being advised to check that their chimneys are thoroughly swept out in order to prevent fires.

The chimney safety advice has been delivered after a spate of fires were reported in the Hereford and Worcester area, with the Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service (HWFRS) seeing an increase in chimney fires from 2009.

Sharon Jones from HWFRS's community safety department said: "While HWFRS attends around 200 chimney and woodburner fires every year, there has been an unusually high call-out rate this winter and this upward trend is very concerning."

Ms Jones also noted that fires involving wood stoves and chimneys can be devastating to homeowners, as they can easily spread to roof areas and other floors or possibly destroy a property entirely.

However, she advised that home insurance customers can easily stop a fire from happening by ensuring their chimneys are regularly swept by a professional.
