Car insurance: How to stay safe on the roads this Christmas

Wednesday, 02 December 2009

Drivers are being urged to be prepared for winter driving and avoid having to make a car insurance claim.

The bad weather and additional traffic on the road can make accidents more likely, warns accident lawyer Thomas M Kiley.

He advises motorists to ensure their car is in good, working order before they even think about setting off.

Check tyres are correctly inflated and have enough grip and keep the petrol tank at least half full to avoid a freeze-up, he suggests.

An emergency kit containing jump leads, a torch, first-aid kit, blankets and water should be kept in the vehicle in case of a breakdown or accident.

Mr Kiley also urges motorists to allow more time for their journeys over winter, pointing out that delays are inevitable but should not encourage drivers to speed or engage in reckless driving to make up time.

Total has also given advice to drivers on staying safe this Christmas, pointing out that all windscreens and windows should be completely clear of ice, snow and dirt before heading off.
