Car insurance: Council honoured for protecting workers at the wheel

Friday, 11 September 2009

Employees in Gloucestershire who get behind the wheel during the course of their professional duties may be less likely to be involved in an accident - and have to make a subsequent car insurance claim - than workers in other parts of the country.

The area's county council has been named a business champion as part of RoadSafe's government-backed Driving for Better Business initiative.

It was honoured for its efforts to protect its own staff behind the wheel and for working to raise awareness among local companies about the potential dangers of employment-related vehicle use.

Currently, there are up to 200 traffic casualties and fatalities in the UK every week following collisions involving people driving in a professional capacity.

Speaking on behalf of the council, Garry Handley from the Road Safety Partnership said: "Companies have a legal duty to protect employees when they are driving and, therefore, we are encouraging and promoting the importance of work-related road safety policies."

Meanwhile, businesses that implement strategies to reduce traffic accident rates may benefit financially, as they are more likely to qualify for cheap vehicle insurance.
