Travel insurance: Dishonest travellers risk wrong cover

Thursday, 05 July 2007

Travel insurance customers should not withhold medical information from their provider in the hope of getting cheaper cover, according to an insurance company.

Customers who do mislead their travel insurance provider about a pre-existing condition could find that they have inappropriate cover or their policy has been invalidated.

Travel insurance issuers can accommodate conditions but it is important to be honest about them or holidaymakers won't have the right cover.

Details of medication or treatment should be openly disclosed and holidaymakers should get over the fear that being honest will cost them more.

Being up front with travel insurers providers is particularly important when travelling outside Europe. The US for example has very high medical expenses and, if travellers are not honest with their policy provider, they could find themselves footing the whole bill.
