It is vital that homeowners are able to carry out basic improvements to their residence, it has been claimed.

Such work can help them manage their property and live in their home more successfully, according to Jason Orme, editor at the magazine Homebuilding and Renovating.

Mr Orme explained that, much like a car, owning a home can be very expensive if someone does not have good knowledge on the simple and easy things to repair.

However, homeowners should ensure they do not attempt tasks that they are uncomfortable with, as it could end in disaster or a home insurance claim.

"If you can deal with the basic day-to-day tasks of house management such as putting up wallpaper and basic DIY then you are not only going to save a lot of money, but are also going to feel a bit more like you are in charge of your own domain," he said.
