More than two thirds of British drivers taking their cars overseas are taking risks as they do not know what their car insurance policy covers, according to new research. The study found that 69 per cent of motorists making their way out of the UK for a holiday were unaware of the extent of their motor insurance cover.A poll revealed that one in ten, the equivalent of 2.5 million drivers mistakenly assume that being covered in the UK means that their car is covered abroad as well. However, cover that is fully comprehensive in the UK may not offer the same level of protection overseas.EU law only requires providers to offer minimum or third person cover, to drivers on EU roads. This means that drivers are not covered, instead only damaged caused to another driver or car is covered. And the study also found that the holiday feeling tends to make UK motorists less responsible, and therefore in bigger need of car insurance, with one in ten more likely to break the local speed limit while abroad.
