Travel insurance: Brits make early start for bank holiday

Friday, 25 August 2006

Savvy Brits are planning to make an early start this weekend to make the most of the bank holiday.

With roads expected to be busy and airports still imposing tough security measures, thousands of Britons are planning an early escape from work.

Research by the price comparison website moneysupermarket.com has shown that one in ten were planning to head off yesterday, while 17 per cent expected to be on their way by 3pm today.

"The bank holiday is always a busy time on Britain's roads, and no one wants to waste half of their break stuck in traffic," said director of insurance Richard Mason.

"But it's always a toss up between leaving early or waiting till the rush has passed, and our research shows that the majority of bank holiday drivers prefer not to risk leaving it too late to make a break for it."

Anyone planning a long weekend away would do well to remember that it is still worth taking out some travel insurance.

Many Britons ignore the advice of the travel industry when taking short breaks, especially when they are not going abroad.
