The most popular car dads used to drive was the Ford Cortina, according to a survey from HPI.

Its research revealed to car insurance owners that the must have motor of the 60s and 70s was the Cortina with 22 per cent of respondents remembering this as the family vehicle of choice.

On top of this, Ford's Sierra came second in the poll and third place was shared between the Vauxhall Cavalier, Mini and the Austin Montego.

Nicola Johnson, consumer services manager for HPI, said: "We may shudder when we think of the brown and orange monstrosities our dads drove us to school in, in the 60s, 70s and 80s, but they hold some fond memories."

Recently, Saab revealed that the country's favourite car games include backseat face snap, traffic bingo, the alphabet game and guess upon a rainbow.

Charles Toosey, managing director at the company, added that with more families leading hectic lives it is important that they enjoy the quality time they have together while in a vehicle.
