Making sure your tyres are in good condition can play a crucial role in keeping car insurance quotes down by avoiding accidents.

Ensuring that tyres are properly inflated will help to prolong their life, according to the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM).

Industry specialists believe that a 20 per cent reduction in tyre pressure will decrease their lifespan by up to 30 per cent.

Advanced motoring expert Simon Elstow from IAM Drive and Survive explains that guaranteeing a tyre is correctly inflated will also have a significant impact on fuel bills.

Mr Elstow said: "Check tyre pressure when the tyres are cold, at least once a month - and weekly is far better. And don't be tempted to over-inflate them."

He explained that over-inflated tyres cause poor vehicle handling as well as reduced stability in braking, cornering and a reduced grip.

The expert stated that tyres can be saved if damage is noticed early.
