A leading motoring group has advised the government to raise motor insurance holders' awareness of winter tyres.

The tyres could be essential for motorists this season, as they can help to ensure safe driving in hazardous road conditions, according to experts at DIAmond Advanced Motorists and the Driving Instructors Association (DIA).

DIA general manager Steve Garrod said: "There's a simple solution to many of the problems British road users are currently experiencing - and the government should be more far-sighted in encouraging drivers to fit winter tyres."

Mr Garrod added that winter tyres can also offer many economic benefits, as people can get to work, deliveries can be completed and car insurance claims can be reduced.

Amid the current weather, the DIA wants the government to launch a public information programme featuring high profile TV ads that could encourage more people to use winter tyres.

As well as this, the organisation feels that the tyres could also benefit vehicles such as trucks and buses.
