Motor insurance customers could 'benefit from harmonised speed limits'

Thursday, 06 May 2010

Car insurance customers could be aided if speed limits for buses and lorries are harmonised, it has been claimed.

Recently, a government consultation took place on the motorway speed limits of heavy goods vehicles and passenger carrying vehicles.

The Freight Transport Association (FTA), which represents the transport interests of companies moving goods by road, does support efforts to normalise speed limits and believes that road safety would be improved if this were enforced, which would result in fewer accidents that affect the premiums of car insurance customers.

Despite supporting the government's plans, the leading trade body has questioned why it would choose to enforce different limits for lorries and buses.

More accidents could occur if speed limits are levelled between motorists and commercial vehicle drivers, argues the FTA, because risky overtaking would take place, which could result in car insurance customers losing their no-claims bonus.

"For the most part it is the differential between speed limits that causes the greatest problems so any efforts to reduce this gulf must be supported," said Malcolm Bingham, head of road network management policy at the FTA.
