Car insurance: Motorists not up-to-speed on Highway Code

Thursday, 05 November 2009

British motorists are putting their car insurance at risk by being out of touch with the Highway Code, according to new research.

Only three per cent of drivers could correctly identify five standard rules from the Code in a survey by price comparison site moneysupermarket.com.

Further, two-thirds of motorists failed to recognise the sign for 'no vehicles' and more than a third admitted they do not know what the sign means.

For roads where a 30 mph minimum applies, the research found almost half of car insurance customers believed the sign to represent roads where a 30 mph top speed limit should be adhered to.

Thankfully, the vast majority of drivers correctly identified the sign for 'oncoming vehicles have the right of way over you'.

The Highway Code applies to England, Scotland and Wales and many of its rules are legal requirements.

Disobeying these rules may lead to a fine, penalty points or disqualification from driving.

Steve Sweeney from moneysupermarket.com said: "It is worrying to see so many British motorists 'crash and burn' when tested on standard Highway Code rules."
