Holidays need environmental ratings

Monday, 12 December 2011

A third of UK holidaymakers believe that holidays abroad should be given environmental ratings in the same way that they are awarded stars for ratings.

Of Brits looking for travel insurance, this means that 10 million are keen to find out just how environmentally friendly their foreign ventures are, according to the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) survey.

The number of people looking for such information has seen an increase this year, with four per cent more curious about environmental holidays than in 2010.

Women are the most environmentally friendly, with 38 per cent of female travellers saying green aspects of a destination are a consideration.

Soren Stober, Travelife's business manager, said: "These findings back up research from the same survey that more and more people are expecting holiday companies to be both socially and environmentally responsible."

In October, ABTA's previous Consumer Trends Survey found that a fifth of Brits travel abroad without travel insurance.
